sv evi
We began looking for a sailboat to fit our family of five in March 2022. Ideally, we wanted to find a boat in Mexico, so we could drive our minivan down to the boat to begin cruising. We decided that a Hallberg Rassy 45′ would be the perfect boat for us because it’s not too big, yet it has the right layout for our family of 5 (and enough room to comfortably sleep a family of 4 who comes to visit us!). Turns out our perfect boat was in Opua, NZ, and not in Mexico. evi is a 1991 Hallberg Rassy 45′ who had a big refit (and new teak decks!) in 2013 in Italy.
SV evi was built in 1991, and it had a complete refit in 2012, including new teak decks. We love the center cockpit and the hard dodger. It has a genset, solar panels, electric flush toilets (!), dinghy davits, water maker, and a new mainsail.

why evi?
Evi Nemeth is my auntie — my dad’s older sister and one of the most important people in my life. She taught me how to sail. She modeled how to live life to the fullest. Evi captained her own boat SV Wonderland from 2001 – 2013. I sailed with her in 2002 in the Bahamas, across the Atlantic for 8 months in 2004-2005, and also in Tahiti-Samoa in 2011 and Fiji in 2012. In all that time, we never met another female captain. Evi was such a competent and careful captain. I remember just Evi and I in the Bahamas, pulling the anchor up by hand. She gave me a lot of responsibility. Evi was tragically lost at sea in June 2013, sailing from Opua to Australia on the wooden boat Niña. She was 73 years young. She would be thrilled to see us sailing with our kids. Ironically, we will begin our journey where she ended hers. We wanted to invoke her spirit to help keep us safe on the ocean by naming our boat after her.
