Savusavu to Matagi

Game Day

After a couple of days in Matai hanging with the locals and playing music, conversing and drinking kava we sailed around the top of Taveuni to Matagi Island.  I had yet to visit this anchorage which is in a stunning, reef fringed, horseshoe shaped bay.  The island is private and owned by a local resort tho the only beach at the head of the bay was only populated with a few wild goats.  The resort was located around the point but we still needed permission to anchor which was granted and a request to come ashore was declined.  So with the $1000/night resort nearby, they had a cell tower and we managed to get some crappy internet to stream the UW-Stanford football game.  We drank beers, ate fresh barracuda sushi, played cribbage and listened to the Dawgs upset the heavily favored Stanford.

The upside of the landing restriction was we braved the elements and open ocean and made a commando run in the dinghy to an outer reef in search of a shipwreck.  In a large swell, strong wind and a dark sky we slowly made our way to the dive site and were immediately rewarded with a 100+ft wreck in 10 ft of water with 100+ft visibility.  We continued the circling the reef edge, delivering spectacular varieties and colors of hard and soft corals and the usual reef fishes.  Returning to the anchorage with visibility better we noticed Bodhran’s anchoring was suspect and he pulled the hook as I scouted a better spot from the water.  Here is a pic looking up from 30ft down as the anchor falls.
