oh, the birds!

New Zealand is a real birder’s paradise. There are so many, so varied and colorful, and loud! And many unique birds because of the isolation of the islands of New Zealand, and the lack of mammalian predators (until the Māori arrived from Polynesia, and after them, the Europeans). I’ve been loving hiking around and trying to identify the birds. I remember when my dad, Evi, and I hiked the Milford track in 2000, he would always call back to whatever birds we heard as we hiked along, trying to imitate their calls.

Pukeko — it’s big! I saw it on Urupukapuka island on the weekend
Pied shag, or NZ cormorant, Taylor and I saw a huge tree full of nesting pied shags & babies
Tui, so colorful and distinctive! I saw them eating harakeke flowers on Moturua island

I won’t bore you with more photos from my bird book, but as you can see, I’m having fun trying to identify them. 🙂

And here are some pictures from various hikes around the Bay of Islands.

  1. You’ll have to sail down to Rakiura to spot a kiwi!
