My 50th birthday (observed)!
I wanted to do something special to celebrate this decade birthday (my real birthday is Sept. 14th). I decided that a backpacking trip to Third Beach would be perfect for me. I camped there as a child with my dad, and have tried to go back every summer since having kids. It is a special…

Family time
We visited with Abuela Mo on two separate days this summer — hanging at Alki Beach and a park in West Seattle. It was lovely to see her! We went to our annual Chin family reunion at Oyhut Bay in Ocean Shores, WA. It was a blast, as usual. Our kids rented bikes (for free)…

Santa Fe
Next stop on our summer visit was two weeks in Santa Fe, where we visited Susha, Christy, and their kids Espe & Willie. After a few days, Susha and Christy went on a special trip to Portland. Ma and I were on with 5 kids for 6 days! It went really smoothly. The kids decided…

Home sweet home!
This year we doubled our visit time to the States from 5 weeks to 10 weeks. It felt more sane this go-round. We got to have one-on-one quality time with friends, lots of family time, and do some camping and backpacking. I flew with the three kiddos on June 11th. Riki stayed 12 days longer…

Malacca Strait southbound from Penang
We had fun with Sanne & the girls in Penang while Koen was working in Bangkok. One highlight was the Wonder Food Museum — a fun, creative, informative, and interactive museum about Malaysian food. The museum had giant bowls of different traditional Malaysian dishes (fake food, not real), and lots of great photo opportunities. I…

Melting in April!
We launched evi on 4th April. It was stressful since Riki had done so much work with the engine that we weren’t sure if it would start…Jeff Pang, our marine diesel mechanic, sparky, and all-around boat whiz came with us on the trip to Ao Po Marina to help monitor things. After all of Riki’s…

Bac Ha, Vietnam
Riki told me that he wouldn’t be ready for us on March 24th, so we extended our trip in Vietnam by another week. Ma flew home on March 25th, so it was just the kids and I. We took a 7 hour car ride from Hanoi to the town of Bac Ha, up in the…

Tam Coc, Vietnam
We went to Tam Coc on Thu’s recommendation, in order to visit the Trang An UNESCO World Heritage site. We visited Trang An early on a Sunday morning. We didn’t have to wait in line long, but there were so many people! Most of the other tourists were Vietnamese. We got rowed around for two…

Hanoi, Vietnam
The food in Vietnam was spectacular! So fresh and so delicious. I got addicted to iced coconut coffee, which came blended Frappuchino style. In Hanoi we had an Airbnb in the Old French Quarter — there was so much happening there all the time. Cars, scooters, pedicabs, and pedestrians all in the narrow streets with…

Chiang Mai & Bangkok
In Chiang Mai we had a great Airbnb. It had lots of outdoor space, and bikes we could use for free. We were in an artsy neighborhood near lots of yummy coffeeshops. We visited some elephants — no riding, bathing, touching, or feeding. Just watching them in the jungle eating corn, and chopping sugarcane to…
