Surf Camp

Tomu and Jade had surf camp for one week, from 9 am to noon each day. Our dear friend Melva lent us her only car for the week so we could transport the kids to surf camp and back each day (a 15-minute drive up the coast). We also drove to Whangarei to go to the grocery store. We enjoyed reuniting with our friends Taylor, Brad & Rex (Vietnamese spring rolls on sv evi and vegan tacos on SV Pangea) and also a delicious dinner on land at Melva & Hilton’s house, Ratty’s Landing. Riki’s friend Dylan at the marina hooked us up with lots of free shower and laundry tokens. We had a great week AND were definitely burning the candle at both ends with lots of time in the sun and late-night visiting with friends.

Jade was nervous and crying the first morning of surf camp, but all smiles at the end of the first day. Jade was the youngest kid in the camp (out of 21 students). They both had a blast. Here are some pics & videos.

The 4 surf instructors were really kind! They often played rock paper scissors and chopsticks with the kids during their lunch break or out in the water while waiting for a wave.

Luz was jealous of her big sibs surfing, so we organized a 2-hour group lesson on Friday for her. She was really nervous and crying at first, but after 15 minutes in the water, she told her surf instructor that she was ready for a big wave. He told me he was really impressed with how well she did — that she could catch some waves on her own, and he would look back to see her standing up on the board.

I missed her long ride with the video…

Tomu turned 10 a few days ago, and his present was a 7′ soft top surfboard. πŸ™‚
