Provisioning (ie. grocery shopping) in Vanua Balavu

On Monday morning, I went to pick up Taylor at 6:00 am in our dinghy. Then we pulled up the anchor and had coffee while motoring about an hour to get to the village of Daliconi. The video is us going through the Bay of Islands.

After we anchored near the village, Riki took Taylor and I in the dinghy and dropped us at shore. We had to get out and wade the last bit. We were ready with our small backpacks and many grocery bags. We chatted with a man while waiting for the truck to come.

Our ride to the town of Lomaloma — it took about 45 minutes

In Lomaloma there were 2 stores. In the first one, you could see everything they had for sale spread out on the shelves behind the counters. I got flour, onions, potatoes, ramen, breakfast crackers, some Tang for a treat drink, a box of cookies, and a whole frozen chicken, along with 2 packages of frozen chicken sausage. I asked about eggs — Sa oti (finished). Then we checked out the second store.

This store had produce! Apples and oranges were 75 cents each, and I bought 3 kilos of carrots. The window behind the counter was very small, and you couldn’t really see what they had, but they had lots of stuff. They had eggs and cheese. I had to borrow $50 from Taylor because I wasn’t prepared for how expensive things would be.

and then we walked back to the first store for ice cream! and sat on the grass and chatted while we waited for the truck to take us back. Going with Taylor made an onerous task into a fun adventure — a girls’ night out, if you will. And then we did all the transport in reverse: truck, dinghy, big boat. A lot different than getting in my car & driving to Fred Meyer!
