Waterfalls and Orang-utans

Our visa extensions got approved! Whew! We had to give them some additional documents, but it worked out.

We had a lovely time on Moyo Island, where we visited two amazing waterfalls and met a nice family who has recently moved from St. Croix to Bali. We hired 3 guys to take us 6 km on their scooters to get to the first waterfall — thank goodness I didn’t try to drive the scooter on this bumpy dirt road! Here are some pictures.

Playing Catan with Sarene, Eric, and Chayla one evening. We also had them out to the boat and took them snorkeling.

We hiked about 45 minutes to get to the second waterfall. This one had a rope swing off the top! Everyone went off it except me. Too scary!

Luz went with Riki a few times first, but then she did it on her own.
About 15 local kids walked the last bit of the trail with us and showed us where to go.

From Moyo we did an overnight to Gili Air, near Lombok. We met up with our friends on SV Tayrona. We’ve been hanging out with them for about 10 days now — our kids are having a blast together.

We visited the Lombok Wildlife Park, together with SV Bosuns Mate and SV Tayrona. It was a marvelous day. We got to have a 5 minute interaction with Kiki, a 7 year old female orang-utan. In Indonesian orang means person, and utan means forest. So the orangutans are the people of the forest. It was so amazing to interact with Kiki; however, she was a little unpredictable and could move quite fast. You will see in the video at one point she scared Luz by grabbing for her head. Also, at one point she had her foot, which has an opposable thumb, grabbing the back of Riki’s neck! She liked to play “roly poly” with Riki. Tomu didn’t want to interact with Kiki, so he just watched.

Here are a few more photos from the wildlife park.

We sailed south in the Lombok Strait to Gili Asahan and passed many Indonesian sailing boats.

Jade has been making purses lately, with the fabric and embroidery from our friend Melva in NZ.

Now we are at Marina Del Ray, on Gili Gede, near Lombok. We leave the boat in three days for our trip home. As soon as we got here, I started feeling sick. I tested positive for COVID today. It’s a bummer feeling sick while trying to clean clean clean and pack up for a big trip. Riki also got sick, but he is feeling better now.

  1. How fun! Have a great trip home guys and hope you are all feeling better. I want to play roley poley with Kiki! I think she was sweet on Riki 🙂 Bruno and I really enjoyed this blog post, so many cool adventures!
