In Spite of Ourselves is the name of a John Prine song that he sings with Iris De Ment. It’s a love song with some funny lyrics. John Prine has a special place in both Riki & my hearts because when we met in Savu Savu, Fiji two years ago Riki was playing guitar and he asked me what songs I’d like to hear.
I said, “Do you know any John Prine?”
He laughed and said, “Are you kidding me? That’s all I know!”.
Also John Prine was my dad’s favorite musician, and listening to him never fails to conjure up thoughts of our father for my siblings and me.
So one really special part of our wedding ceremony was when Susha and Weston sang a duet to In Spite of Ourselves. Susha, or “Juanita Prine” as I call her, played the guitar. At the end, they made up a special verse each for Riki and myself. It was so moving for me…I cried of course. Following are the lyrics:
She’s first in line at the dinner table
Dances real crazy, lives life with no label
She rock climbs with the best of them
A bad-ass teacher and a real true friend
He took off sailing, left a baby in my belly
Turned right around and docked the Guava Jelly
He makes Wade laugh more than anyone
A partner and a father, he’s a ton of fun

thanks Sush & Worty!! we love you!
