Boat christening party

On Saturday evening we had friends over to christen our boat. There is a lot of superstition among sailors that it is bad luck to change a boat’s name, and there are lots of rules to be followed about proper re-naming.

We had some appetizers and drinks in the cockpit, then everyone went out to the foredeck and I spoke a little bit about my auntie evi, the namesake for our boat. (Read more about my amazing auntie evi here). Riki spoke about how we didn’t follow all the re-naming traditions but made our best effort, and we poured a bottle of champagne on the bow for Poseidon. Then we all toasted to evi!

My aunt evi never capitalized her name on emails or real letters — so sailing vessel evi is also in lowercase.

Drinking some champagne to celebrate S/V evi, my auntie evlet, and my daughter Evi Luz Bailey, while wearing the EVI dress (in boat flags). To all the evi’s!!
This bottle of Glenlivet Scotch is actually from evi’s boat Wonderland, passed on from my cousin Laz to evi’s friend Wayne on S/V Solstice, and back to us.

It was such a lovely evening! We had folks from Italy, France, Switzerland, England, New Zealand, Spain, and the U.S. on board. I heard conversations in three different languages going on. 🙂 Harry, Sonia, and Mathilde from S/V Itsara brought us a delicious chocolate cake from the French patisserie in Kerikeri to celebrate.

Friends!

  5. hi Hannah and Rick, I started reading your new blog as you prepared and left for NZ. I lost track of your whereabouts and events whilst in Ecuador. Somewhere in those posts was the news of selling (?) Guava Jelly from storm damage. I have been completely swamped with my family’s events, especially since the onset of the SARS2 pandemic in 2020. Suffice it to say that it had a fatal impact for my mom who succumbed to covid in Nov ’20. I had been caring for both parents since July ’20 and continued with my dad (dementia) until Sept ’22 and when he passed. I am now about to complete my duties as executor of the family Trust and can move forward with my possible opportunities ahead.
I have enjoyed your posts about your new adventure and sailboat starting with preparation and departure to NZ. From the post on renaming the boat to “evi”, I followed the link to the story of your beloved aunt. What a great story and person you describe. I am thinking that your boat is your aunt’s “Wonderland”. I shall continue to enjoy your and Rick’s story of family and legacy. My best wishes to you all and warmest regards for sharing your story.
